Five Card Stud Rules

Although five card stud isn’t an extremely popular game, you can still find it in some casinos and online poker rooms.

Five card stud rules are very similar to seven card stud rules, which is a more popular form of stud poker. Five card stud begins, like most poker games, with all players placing their ante. The dealer then deals each player two cards, one face down (a hole card), and the other face up (a door card).

The player with the lowest door card places the opening bet. Each player to the left of that player must then, in turn, either call, raise or fold. Every betting round after this third door card is dealt is started by the highest poker hand showing.

When the first round of betting is complete each player is dealt another door card, and this is followed by another round of betting. This continues through three more door cards, or until only one player remains.

At the end, all players will have five cards in their hand, one face down and four face up. After the last round of betting players show their hole card in the final showdown. The winner of the pot is the player with the highest ranking hand (see Poker Hand Rankings).
